Pair of mallards

I'm keeping it simple this week

beautiful plumage on both birds - the male has the eye-catching jewel coloured sheen but the female has intricate patterns.

a pair of childhood learning memories from this pair of birds
- 'duck and drake' takes me back to primary school lessons when we had to learn lists of names for male, female and young of lots of species
- Mallard ducks may well have been the first birds that I learnt to identify - from a colouring in picture in an children's activity book that came with a farming magazine, when I was 4

what memories and stories will be prompted by all the pairs this week?

That's a great pair. That's one thing they didn't teach us at school, sometimes I wish they had. The drake looks like he's only got one leg in that picture.

The mallard was the second bird I could identify as a child, the first was the robin!

I love your photos, you've really managed to capture the beauty of the plumage.

They are beautiful; both of them. I have no memory of when I learned those terms.

I love ducks, they make me think 'spring' Asleep and awake is a great idea for a pair. Now if only I could get my dog to wake up for a moment...
Beautiful plumage, reminds me of something...

Patiently waiting for the ducks(and robins) to return to Winnipeg(have only seen geese).

I love to see the ducks by the river. Lovely photos.

Beautiful photos, but I think I like your commentary even more. I don't think I ever recovered from the shock of learning that a female dog is called a bitch.

I'm not sure what I like more - your photos or your clever caption. Both are awesome!

I love the pairing and the words you used as a title. A great idea for a post.
It is interesting you ask about learning as a child, this has been a topic of conversation this week. I think schools dumb down learning and so much is removed from the natural world and first hand experience. Our own memories are so much richer than children of today in my experience. Sad.
