Photo Scavenger Hunt

End of summer and time to wrap up Rinda’s summer photo scavenger hunt.  With this photo of me holding a cushion with the Scottish flag I have captured all items on the list, using a sub for the hanging swing.

And here is the double spread in my Project Life album showing all of the items

I really enjoyed hunting for the items and looking at the variety of images that were found for simple things like a washing line. And I love how these photos tell some stories about my summer as well as collecting the items.  Thanks Rinda, looking forward to the next one.

summertime scavenger hunt takes wing

I finaly came across an angel – after the wedding stalking this was my least predictable item.  During the Fringe festival many different buildings are pressed into service as theatre space and one show that I went to was in the Art College where the corridors are filled with sculptures – including this angel.  No head or hands but the wings were intact so I was satisfied.

So I have found all the items – just the final item to reveal as summer comes to an end.  Thanks Rinda for another fun hunt.

photo scavenger hunt–movie poster

I see lots of movie posters on the sides of buses in Edinburgh and was in danger of missing this item on Rinda’s scavenger hunt list because I saw it so often.  I finally snapped one when I was in town – the first I got a clear shot of just happened to be for Ted.

photo scavenger hunt pier

I spotted this pier on a lovely walk along the coast – I’ve looked in that direction many time before but the knowledge that I was looking for a pier made me pay attention to what I was seeing.  Another scored off my list for Rinda’s scavenger hunt list.

photo scavenger hunt clothesline

The second item on Rinda’s summertime photo scavenger hunt list is a clothesline.  Early on I took a photo of the one in my garden covered in raindrops

3-July

but then on a walk I saw a more interesting clothesline and decided to use this for my hunt collection.  These are a row of houses near where I live with pulley lines for the people in the upper flats – I love how practical they are.  The poles in the grass in front are for more, communal clothesline on the green – sometimes I see travellers hanging their blankets on these lines – I love the idea of community clothes lines.

confessions of a photo hunter

I found the elusive photo of a bride, but, in order to snap it I stalked a wedding !!!

I was in town, fairly near the registrar’s office when i noticed a group of people walking that way dressed posh, so I though they might be wedding guests.  So I casually walked in their direction and sure enough they were met outside the building by two men and a boy in full formal kilt outfits with heather pinned to the jacket.  I didn’t take any photos as I was still in stalking mode.

Soon a taxi drew up and 3 women in evening dress, carrying flowers got out and I was sure I was about to find a bride.  Sure enough the next car to pull up had this lady inside.  I quickly clicked 2 photos then disappeared back into the crowd.

Item 16, a bride ticked off.  Now not sure who to stalk to find an angel !

photo scavenger hunt visits some festivals

One of the things I love about Edinburgh is the range of festivals over the summer.  i love them for the buzz and energy and also for the photo opportunities.  I love them even more this year for supplying 3 items on Rinda’s summer photo scavenger hunt list.

The Fringe festival takes over a street in town and is filled with buskers, people in costume and some stalls selling lovely craft items (item 4).  I’m always fascinated by people who make fabulous creations from balloons

At the start of the Jazz and Blues festival there was a carnival in the middle of town which included people dancing (item 15)

And my local ‘Honest Toun’ festival week involves lots of horse riding, which means a horse (item 10)

Photo scavenger hunt halftime linkup

Rinda suggested a halftime link up for photo scavenger hunters.  I’m enjoying seeing the different images people have for each item as well as hunting for my own items.

When I first saw the list there were 3 that I thought would be hardest because I don’t know where to find them and have to rely on keeping my eyes open and camera to hand.

#8 a person dresses as an angel or a statue of an angel.  Angels are not seen on gravestones and churches around here – I’m thinking because of the Calvinistic church history of Scotland and its preference for plain and practical.

#16 a bride.  I need to start hanging out near wedding venues on a Saturday

# 20 a swing hanging from a tree (or a hammock).  Even during a sunny summer I wouldn’t expect to see these around town.

Rinda nicely offered the chance to substitute an item this year with a photo of a heart shaped stone or a four leaved clover.  Earlier this month I spent a walk along the beach studying the stones instead of the view and did find a heart shaped stone

rinda-sub

I think I’ll use it for #20.

Which leaves me struggling for a bride and an angel – and I don’t think I’ll get away with rearranging the letters!

Summer scavenger hunt–shadow

Item 11 on Rinda’s summertime  photo scavenger hunt 2012 is a shadow and should be easy, more a matter of choosing a good subject than searching for it.
But according to the weather experts, this month Edinburgh had had less than 2 hours of sunshine as of 17 July – when its not raining its overcast.  So I was unexpectedly excited on my walk last Thursday when I spotted shadows.  I decided I’d better capture some in case the month ends as it started.

Still keeping a look out for an angel and bride

More scavenger hunting

I’m continuing to keep my eyes open for items on  Rinda’s summertime photo scavenger hunt list and have a few more to share.

rinda-fountain

The fountain was in a big garden centre

rinda-ball

and I finally managed to capture a photo of a person with a ball on a walk on the beach – many previous attempts miss the ball or the person.  I’m pleased with my cropping on this one.

I’m going to display all of the photos in a double page spread inside my Project Life album.  I have the list and a header and then I’m adding a pennant with a number to each photo.  Each item has a 3 x 4 space – here are 4 I’ve already printed

And finally, I’m passing the book to Alison (after flipping a coin) – I have your address and will get it in the post at the weekend.

and then it rained some more

we’ve had a lot of rain in the UK over the last few weeks – both heavy rain and many days of rain.  At the weekend the water levels in my local river rose above the banks and covered the park where I normally walk.  I was talking to a neighbour who has lived here for years who said that she couldn’t remember the water coming up so high and then as she went on her way she laughed and said ‘all we can do is grumble’.  I immediately thought that would make an excellent title for a layout with photos of the over flowing river.

pl-july-1-big

In the big photo – that tree is usually surrounded by grass and those black things sticking out of the water are the tall plants in the flower beds.

8-july-(3)

And I decided to use the photo with the bright coloured barrier as my take on ‘border’ in Rinda’s Summertime Photo Scavenger hunt – it shows an artificial border erected to stop the water; the border of leaves showing the high watermark and the border between water and grass

rinda-border

and this is what it usually looks like – the water really did rise above its normal position

8-july-(1)

it seems from news reports that unseasonal weather is common at the moment – are you experiencing it at the moment?

Summertime photo scavenger hunt–come walk with me

When I was in the centre of town last week to visit the labyrinth I chose my route so that I could capture some of the other items on Rinda’s photo scavenger hunt list.  Come walk with me, first past the central library in a wonderful old building

26-june-(9)

then along the road to find a nice view of the castle which is an historic landmark

26-june-(13)

which I took standing at the top of a staircase

26-june-(12)

although it is easier to see looking up from the bottom

26-june-(14)

and luckily at the bottom was a man playing several musical instruments

26-june-(15)

and I could also her the distinctive skirl of the bagpipes and spotted this man

26-june-(17)

then walking on the bridge over the rail tracks I captured 2 trains in the station

26-june-(16)

I knew I’d be able to capture a building of worship on my walk and the first that I came across was the city mosque

26-june-(2)

So that was a satisfying 7 items (including he labyrinth) on one walk.

Summertime photo scavenger hunt –labyrinth

One of the items on Rinda’s 2012 Summertime Photo Scavenger Hunt is a maze or labyrinth.  I wasn’t aware of either in Edinburgh so I turned to Google and discovered that there is a labyrinth in the park on University campus.  It wasn’t there when I was a student but that was 30 years ago and a lot has changed since then.  The labyrinth uses the design from one in Chartres Cathedral in France.

So given that it was sunny on Tuesday and with so much rain each sunny day must be spent outside – I set off to find the labyrinth.

labyrinth-1

and walked along the twisting path

labyrinth-2

until I reached the middle

labyrinth-3

I like labyrinths and the idea of taking a long walk by twisting the path to cover every part of a small space.

An unexpected and good start to this summer’s photo scavenger hunt.
