Snap and Hunt with animals

SNAP-4-ANIMALS
My set this week was the result of a family discussion of sets to photograph in Edinburgh – we mentioned several more animal sculptures so I may have a part 2 of this later in the year.

And animal statue is one of the alternates on the winter scavenger hunt so another ticked of that list too.

I’m enjoying all the ways in which you are using snap and look forward to more creativity this week

5 in 5 after the rain

Joining Sandie for her lovely monthly 5 in 5 meme and ticking off another item for the scavenger hunt.  After so much rain there are plenty of puddles (item 6) and a sunny interval meant lovely reflections in them too - I took so many photos on one stretch of path that when I was back at my computer I realised they would be perfect for my January 5 in 5

Winter photo hunt progress

I’ve been making good progress with the lovely winter photo hunt list that Eileen and Joy have created.  I’ve used items 3 (outside lighting), 8 (a wreath) and 9 (a tree that has lost all its leaves) for my last two pairs.  I’ve been collecting a few more so thought I’d share them today

I’m not sure I’ll see a living robin red breast long enough to get a good photo but 3 of the Christmas cards I’ve received feature a robin in different ways – item 1 done.

tinsel (item 2) is hard to photograph well – I’ll probably try this again in different light

another one that is hard to capture is 15 – candle light – I’ll be on the lookout for another opportunity to try this one too

I liked these stars decorating the window of a big high street story – love the cheeky style – item 4

For item 17 – a ladder – I decided to go for a different perspective and took this one looking down when I was up the ladder hanging lights in my living room.

Thanks to Eileen and Joy for the fun list.

Pair of doors

While looking for some interesting wreaths for the winter scavenger hunt I found a lovely range of styles and thought that I could use 2 for a nice pair

my own door has a gold tinsel circle because it is dark and when I tried a greenery wreath it disappeared into the shadows so I looked for something light and sparkly.

Only a pair of pairs left after this week. Several of you have wondered about next year - I'm thinking 'Snap' / '4 of a Kind'.  Some overlap with pairs but allowing for a few more photos some weeks.  What I was thinking was between 2 to 4 photos with a theme which might be a colour or a shape or an item - I could have used 4 of the wreaths that I found.  I'm sure as the year progresses we will discover other themes to use too.  what do you think?

Looking forward to all your lovely pairs this week and thank you for participating

Pair for the photo hunt

I managed to find a linked pair within the lovely new winter scavenger hunt created by Joy and Eileen

One of the few advantages of it getting dark by 4pm is that I see more of the lights on the trees by the river.  And  I do enjoy the dark branches of the bare trees on the days when we have a nice blue sky.

A good start to the hunt with 3 - outside lighting and 9 a tree that has lost all its leaves

Looking forward to all your lovely pairs

final finds

As the end of winter nears, I’ve found the final items in the winter scavenger hunt – thank you to Eileen and Joy for taking the initiative and providing this fun list.

wsh-19

19 street musician – there is a piper on the main street in Edinburgh most of the time and I finally managed a photo without any tourists

wsh-8

8 a fish – I noticed this was part of a sculpted column in the local theatre – I love their big lips

wsh-2

2 – someone wearing a funny hat – in this case an Italian rugby fan in town for the match

wsh-16

16 – a collection – not sure why this was the last one I took when it has been on my living room wall since I first read the list

and finally one of the subs because I didn’t find anything that worked for me for ‘someone dressed for the season’

wsh-sa

new life – happy to see rhubarb emerge from the earth

Which means I found 20 items and feel nicely satisfied at a list full of ticks.

Winter scavenger hunt–February finds

nearly the end of the month so time to share my February finds for the winter scavenger hunt

I made good progress this month with

WSH-11

11 – polka dots on my shopping trolley

wsh-14

14 a partly built building – I know it just looks like scaffolding but the concrete floor has been poured and the underground carpark is built

WSH-10

10 a letter shape in nature – someone had kindly put the twig between the two trunks, creating an H

wsh-15

15 bunting – in my living room, I made it from William Morris wrapping paper

and with a feel of spring I don’t think I’m going to see snow drifts which is what I think of when I see ‘winter weather’ even though that is not the winter weather I experienced – which would be a picture of green grass or wind.  So here is the most snow I captured – a mere dusting that was gone within an hour (taken through a window that needed washing)

wsh-6

6 winter weather

Which leaves me with 5.  I’m thinking that I would have been wise to capture ‘someone wearing a funny hat’ before Christmas and ‘someone dressed for the season’ when it was colder.  It just means I will need to be more creative in the next few weeks. Street musicians are ever present in the city and I have several collections and I know which fish I want to photograph.

Thanks to Joy and Eileen for a fun winter hunt.

winter photo scavenger hunt–January finds

I’m joining Joy and Elaine for their winter scavenger hunt and this month made a concerted effort to find some items, happened upon others and realised I’d got others when looking through my photos.

So this month I give you

WSH-3-DOOR-K

3 – an ornate door knocker – I had to keep a good eye out for this as I realised once I started looking that few doors in Edinburgh have knockers

WSH-5-100-PLUS

5 – something over 100 years old – this fine granite building was built in the 1830s as Marschial College which later became part of the University of Aberdeen – it is now the headquarters for Aberdeen city council. The tower at the end is not in shadow – it is darker because it was not cleaned during recent renovations as that tower has different owners who were not willing to / could not afford to pay for the cleaning

WSH-13-STAINED-GLASS

13 – stained glass window – OK I’m bending meaning a bit here as these are stained glass panels in the window of a gallery

WSH-17-TEXTURE

17 – texture from the crochet stitch I was using to make a striped scarf and I liked how the stitch looked up close in the different yarns

WSH-18-SHADOW

18 – shadow of me and some trees on a sunny day early in the month – I do enjoy the long shadows from the low sun at this time of year.

I just counted up and I rather neatly have exactly half of the items at this half way point.  Now I need to find a building site and a fish and decide what I want to use for winter weather.

winter scavenger hunt finds

I’m joining in with Joy’s winter photo scavenger hunt, keeping a particular eye out for items that are time bound such as

a nativity (number 20) – I found several examples, in different styles at the European market in town

WINTER-SH-20

and festive lights (number 9) – my local high street has decorative lights and round the corner the trees along the river are festooned with lights

WINTER-SH-9

I’ve also managed two that are not festivity related

a silhouette (number 12) with the low light behind one of the hills in town

WINTER-SH-12

and breakfast (number 4) as we enjoyed a big breakfast when we went to the garden centre / shopping outing for poinsettia and hyacinth bulbs

WINTER-SH-4

I’ve been keeping my eyes open for a letter shape in nature (10) and street musicians (19) who are not surrounded by a crowd but haven’t seen one yet

I’m enjoying this list, plenty of time to join in as we have until March 21st to complete the hunt, you can find the list on Joy’s or Eileen’s blog.

5 in 5 and winter hunt reflection

joining Sandie for her monthly suggestion to take photos for 5 minutes and share your favourite 5 and I used the new winter scavenger hunt organised by Joy to pick the topic – 1st on the list is ‘reflection in water’ and my daily walk by the river provides great opportunities for reflections with the low light at this time of year.

5-in-5-dec

I love the reflections in shallow parts of the river which provide a contrast of pebbles with reflections of the bare trees and the bridge

5-in-5-dec-2

and I always enjoy trying to capture reflections of the birds – much easier when they are standing still than when in flight

5-in-5-dec-3

Thanks to Sandie and Joy for these photographic memes
