Snap cats

These cats all live locally - I see them when I'm out walking or out of my kitchen window.  I don't know the name of any or where they live.

The black and white one is often sitting under than tree - I suspect it is a dry and cosy spot.

The tabby and white looking startled is sitting on my compost bin and was watching me warily as I opened my window to capture they shot - they seem to use this as a staging post before going over the wall into the next door garden - I suspect to 'watch' the birds she feeds

The sleeping tabby was enjoying a spot of sunshine and seemed unperturbed by people walking by.

The two on the fence I saw at the end of the garden - I think they were disputing whose spot that is.

Memorandum Monday with pom poms

I've been playing with pom poms

using a pom pom maker for the first time - way easier than with bits of card like we used to.  Some are fuller than others because I was experimenting with size and fullness.

I added them to the bottom of a decorative strip I had crocheted

using a pattern for lace but with bigger hook and yarn.

Having just taken down my winter / snowman wreath I needed a spring decoration - before I put up my summer bunting.

At the talk of knitting I was at last week they were giving away some wool and I chose a small ball in these 5 colours because I thought they made a good spring palette - at the time I wasn't sure how I would use them.

Snap the shore line

I'm always fascinated watching and snapping people walking along the beach and have a liking for a near silhouette against a big sea.  Here is a collection of 4 from a recent visit to the beach when the tide was out - of course people and dogs still walk along the water line - even with a baby buggy

Memorandum Monday with knitting history

Waving to you all on this lovely spring Monday morning

Sian suggests we share something we learnt or did for the first time well I went to a talk by the curator of an archive of knitting and crochet patterns held by a local museum.  Learnt thing number 1 - that such a collection exists.  They have patterns spanning 1930s to 1980s all of which have been given to them and they have several researchers working on them.

I also learnt that the first recorded item knitted in UK was a pair of stockings knitted by a woman in London for Queen Elizabeth 1 - so 1560s to 1580s.  Prior to that all knitted items came from the French Guild of Knitters - all men.  The apprenticeship for this guild took 7 years and the final exam included knitting socks, a garment and a carpet - I can't imagine how long it would take to knit a carpet or what it would look like.  I also learnt that the earliest recorded instance of the womenfolk knitting warming items for their men at war was the Seven years War - 1755-1764.

Amazing to think that people have been twisting yarn around shaped sticks for centuries.

snap small & white

so many lovely flowers out at the moment, I decided to narrow down my snap category to 'small and white' and have found myself singing bits of 'Eidelweiss' (as heard in the Sound of Music) since as one of the phrases is 'small and white, clean and bright ..'

The snowdrops are in my garden but the others I spotted while out walking around the neighbourhood and peering into other people's gardens

I'm so enjoying the variety of snap subjects that you are sharing and now have quite a list of ideas for future collections

Memorandum Monday in the fog

Waving to you all but you might not be able to see because it is so foggy - I had to head out with my camera for some photos and honestly, I could not always see the other side of the river while walking along

  

the swans looked like apparitions appearing out of the blanket of fog

 

and to fully appreciate this next one you need to imagine the sound of lots of crows cawing - they nest in these trees and their noise added an extra eerie sound to the already strange atmosphere

 

In contrast the weekend provided some lovely clear weather to admire all the flowers that are now in bloom - I love all the spring bulbs that appear and was pleased to spot the first small grape hyacinths popping up in my garden

my other new experience of the weekend was to watch (on TV) Scotland beat France in rugby - the first time in 10 years !!

Snap the lights

One of the parks in the middle of town has an intriguing array of stickman figures made out of light tubes.  I'd only seen it in daylight so made a trip into town after dark to see the magic that illumination would bring to the display.

The lights turn on and off to animate the figures - so it looks like one person is running around the circle, or climbing the tower etc.  Hard to photograph well but fun to watch

Memorandum Monday with the merpeople

A few weeks ago my sister asked me if I would make something for her to take to a baby shower - I readily agreed as I like to have things to hook.  I'd seen a pattern for a mermaid / merman tail baby pouch and we agreed that would fit the bill - I finished it this weekend and it is so cute, even without a baby inside

Then, serendipitously, a pattern for a mermaid figure popped up on a blog I follow and I just had to make that too - a fun weekend project.

Snap the skyline

I love the varied architecture of Edinburgh and the many wonderful skylines available because of the hilly terrain.  This is a view I used to see every day when I was in my 3rd year of University - on my walk to campus - although the glass buildings on the right were not even a dream in an architect's mind back then.

I'll definitely be repeating this from other spots around town.
